Volunteering in Idea Stores

We are looking to recruit local people who are willing to volunteer in their local library or Idea Store.

Please note: you must be a Tower Hamlets resident or an Idea Store learner to apply for volunteering opportunities in Idea Store and there is a requirement of 12 weeks commitment.

Why Volunteer with Idea Store?

We are looking for volunteers to help us support our initiatives. The purpose of any volunteer role is to make an additional contribution to Idea Store. Volunteers add tremendous value to the service in a variety of roles that enhance what we do for residents and assist us in improving and developing what we want to achieve as a service. Benefits of Volunteering

Your Health and Safety whilst Volunteering

You will be guided and shadowed to ensure that you work safely and appropriately at all times. You will have a dedicated member of staff who will act as your mentor and you will have general support from the whole team.
All staff working for Idea Store are CRB checked. All volunteers under the age of 16 will need parental permission to participate as a volunteer. Volunteers over the age of 16 will be CRB checked by us before any volunteering takes place.

Training and Support

Volunteers will be supported by staff on a daily basis. You will shadow staff and buddy up. Idea Store Co-ordinators will be your mentors throughout your volunteering period to ensure your safety and well being.

There is no provision to reimburse any expenses. You will only spend a maximum of four hours on any one day volunteering in an Idea Store or library.


Recruitment and Equal Opportunities of Volunteers

All applicants to volunteer for Idea Store will be interviewed: we will be looking for enthusiasm and commitment in potential volunteers.


As a volunteer you may be working with confidential information. you will be required not to disclose this information to anyone. You will have to comply with the Data Protection Act 1998. Anyone who does not comply may have to leave.


As part of our work with volunteers, we will keep an evaluation of your time with us on record for one year. The evaluation will include dates and times of your volunteering and what you achieved.

We will provide for you, upon request, a copy of this evaluation along with a signed statement that can be used as a reference.

If you reached a satisfactory level of attainment within this period, then we can offer more voluntary roles within the Idea Store and library service.
