Brief course description: This introductory course is perfect for beginners looking to build a solid foundation in digital skills. You will explore a variety of essential tools and platforms, from basic computer use to navigating the internet. Gain the confidence you need to manage everyday digital tasks and start using technology more effectively.

Objectives:

  • Turn on and shut down a computer properly and navigate the desktop environment.
  • Create, save, and organize files and folders on your computer.
  • Access and navigate the internet using a web browser.
  • Set up and manage an email account, including sending and replying to emails.
  • Use word processing software to create and edit documents.
  • Understand basic internet safety and how to avoid common online scams.
  • Use search engines to find information and resources online.
  • Download and install software or apps relevant to your needs.
  • Customize computer settings to improve accessibility and user experience.
  • Participate in online learning platforms or forums to continue your digital education.

Entry requirements:

You will need to be able to show digital skills working towards the required level (Entry 1 / Entry 2) at assessment.

Equipment required :

Please bring to every lesson:

  • A folder
  • Pens & pencils
  • Lined A4 paper
  • A smartphone (if you have one)
  • A reusable water bottle

We will give you the WIFI details in the first lesson.

If you do not have access to a smart phone or a computer at home, speak to your tutor.

What examination is there:

There is no examination for this course. You will agree learning goals with your tutor which you must achieve by the end of the course.

How will I know I am making progress:

At the start of the course, your tutor will talk with you about which of your digital skills you need to practise most and help you create an individual learning plan. Throughout the course, you will have a tutorial meeting to discuss your strengths, areas for improvement, and any problems you may have. You will keep a folder with your work, which will help you review your learning outside of class. Your tutor will give you regular feedback on your class work and homework to help you improve. To make progress, you need to attend all your classes and do work outside of class.
