Course Title: ESOL for Life and Work Entry 1

Hours per week: 5 hours

Brief course description:

This is a year-long course divided up into two 17-week parts. You can join any part over the year.

You will learn useful English for everyday life and work, practicing reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Topics include life in the UK, daily routines, healthy living, jobs, shopping, transport, and different cultures. You will learn to ask and answer basic questions, describe objects and pictures, listen for details, write simple sentences and messages, use punctuation correctly, find information in texts, and build your vocabulary.

By the end of this course, you will be able to use your English for everyday tasks such as shopping, traveling, talking to friends and work colleagues, and more. Join us to improve your English skills and gain confidence in using the language in your daily life.

Objectives:

  1. Ask and Answer Basic Questions: Use present simple, present continuous, and common past simple forms to ask and answer basic questions about everyday topics and personal information.
  2. Communicate About Everyday Topics: Talk and write about simple everyday topics, such as home, family life, and friends.
  3. Describe Objects and Pictures: Use simple adjectives to describe objects and pictures.
  4. Listen for Details: Listen for simple details in short basic recordings.
  5. Write Simple Sentences: Write short simple sentences about people and things using present simple, continuous, and past simple.
  6. Write Notes and Messages: Write short simple notes, messages, emails, and letters to family or friends.
  7. Use Basic Punctuation: Correctly use capital letters, question marks, and full stops in your writing.
  8. Write Clearly: Ensure your writing is clear and easy to read.
  9. Find Information: Locate information in notices, simple adverts, forms, and texts.
  10. Learn and Spell Basic Words: Learn a lot of basic words and their correct spelling.

 

Entry requirements:

This is an Entry 1 ESOL class for adults over 19 years old. You are just starting to learn English and some basic sentences. You might know a few words and can say simple things about yourself. Now, you want to learn more words and feel more confident speaking English.

You will need to do a pre-course assessment.

Equipment required:

Please bring:

  • A folder
  • Pens & pencils
  • Lined A4 paper
  • A smartphone (if you have one)
  • A reusable water bottle

We will give you the WIFI details in the first lesson.

What examination is there:

There is no examination for this course. You will agree individual learning goals with your tutor which you must achieve by the end of the course.

How will I know I am making progress:

At the start of the course, your tutor will talk with you about which parts of your English you need to practise most and help you create an individual learning plan. Throughout the course, you will have a tutorial meeting to discuss your strengths, areas for improvement, and any problems you may have. You will keep a folder with your work, which will help you review your learning outside of class. Your tutor will give you regular feedback on your class work and homework to help you improve. To make progress, you need to attend all your classes and do work outside of class.

You will lose your place if your attendance is less than 80% and you will not receive a certificate of completion.

One of our goals is to help you improve your skills for work or further studies. We also want to help you join in your community and be an active citizen. In our classes, you will learn important skills that employers look for, like:

These skills will help you in many parts of your life.
