Learn English: Your City Your Rights Entry 2/3

Brief course description:
This is a year-long course divided up into four 9-week parts. You can join any part over the year.
This course will help you live in the UK by improving your English and understanding your rights as a resident. You will learn about getting healthcare from the NHS, knowing your rights at work, finding your way around Tower Hamlets and London, understanding welfare benefits, understanding the UK political system, knowing your housing rights, understanding immigration rules, and the benefits of volunteering in your community. You will visit places, read about these places, and talk or write about them.
By the end of this course, you will improve your vocabulary, grammar, writing, reading, listening, and speaking skills. You will also gain important information about your rights in the UK and feel ready to join in your community. Join us and take the first step towards a more informed and empowered future.
Objectives:
- Research and Plan a Trip: Learn to research and plan a trip to a given location in London, and write up an itinerary and directions, using vocabulary related to travel and transportation. Practice structuring your text using simple and complex sentences.
- Write a Short Formal Email: Write a short formal email to your MP, local councillor, or your children’s school, using proper format, polite language, and correct grammar.
- Understand Healthcare Access: Learn about accessing healthcare through the NHS, and practice discussing health issues, making & changing appointments, and asking for medical advice in English.
- Research Volunteering Opportunities: Research volunteering opportunities in the local area with the aid of the tutor and write a short report or summary about the benefits of volunteering.
- Know Your Rights at Work: Understand your rights at work, including how to address issues such as unfair treatment or discrimination. Practice writing a formal complaint letter and role-playing conversations with employers.
- Navigate Your City: Improve your ability to find your way around Tower Hamlets and London by practicing giving and following directions, reading maps, and understanding public transport schedules.
- Understand Welfare Benefits: Learn about welfare benefits available in the UK, and practice filling out forms and writing letters to apply for these benefits.
- Understand the UK Political System: Gain a basic understanding of the UK political system and practice discussing political topics, writing letters to local representatives, and participating in community meetings.
- Know Your Housing Rights: Learn about your housing rights, including how to handle issues with landlords or neighbours. Practice writing formal letters to request repairs or report problems, and role-play conversations with housing officials.
Entry requirements:
This is an Entry 2/3 ESOL class for adults over 19 years old. You should already know some basic English, about the same as Entry 1 level. This means you should be able to understand and use simple sentences and phrases in everyday situations. You should be motivated to improve your English for daily life, work, and community participation. You now want to increase your vocabulary, become more confident in using English for real life tasks, and use language more accurately.
A pre course assessment is required.

What examination is there:
There is no examination for this course. You will agree individual learning goals with your tutor which you must achieve by the end of the course.
How will I know I am making progress:
At the start of the course, your tutor will talk with you about which parts of your English you need to practise most and help you create an individual learning plan. Throughout the course, you will have a tutorial meeting to discuss your strengths, areas for improvement, and any problems you may have. You will keep a folder with your work, which will help you review your learning outside of class. Your tutor will give you regular feedback on your class work and homework to help you improve. To make progress, you need to attend all your classes and do work outside of class.
You will lose your place if your attendance is less than 80% and you will not receive a certificate of completion.

One of our aims is to help you make progress in work or future studies. We also want to help you participate in your communities and become an active citizen. In our Entry 2 classes, you will develop important skills that employers value and that will help you in everyday life. Here’s what you will learn:
- Communication Skills: You will learn to speak and write more clearly and confidently. This includes practising conversations for work, writing emails, and filling out forms.
- Decision-Making: You will learn how to make good choices by evaluating different options and thinking critically about situations.
- Teamwork: You will learn how to work well with others.
- Problem-Solving: You will develop the ability to identify problems and find effective solutions, useful in both work and daily life.
- Time Management: You will practice managing your time effectively, including setting goals and meeting deadlines.
By improving these skills, you will increase your chances of finding a job, advancing in your career, and becoming an active member of your community.
