ESOL Speak with Confidence Entry 1/2

Hours per week: 2.5 hours

Brief course description:

This is a year-long course divided up into four 9-week parts. You can join any part over the year.

You will improve your speaking and listening skills through engaging activities and interactive lessons. The course will help you practice English in real-life situations like speaking on the phone, making appointments, talking to doctors, interacting with teachers at your children's school, and having conversations with neighbours and friends. You will also learn important vocabulary and grammar to help you describe your emotions, feelings, and opinions more clearly.

By the end of the course, you will improve your speaking and listening skills, making it easier to interact confidently in various everyday situations. You will be able to take part in discussions, give short presentations, and understand information from talks and presentations. You will also be able to communicate your feelings and opinions effectively, making you feel more confident in your daily life.

Objectives:

  1. Form Simple Sentences Using Basic Word Order: Describe daily routines and activities by using subject-verb-object sentences, such as “She likes apples” when talking about likes and dislikes or “He lives in London” for giving basic information.

  1. Engage in Basic Social Interactions and Introduce Yourself and Others: Practice greetings, sharing likes and dislikes, responding to simple questions and introduce yourself and others.

  1. Ask Yes/No Questions: Find out simple information by asking questions like “Do you know the address?” when you need directions or information.

  1. Use WH-Questions for Specific Information: Ask questions like "What time does the bus arrive?" to check schedules or "Where is the nearest post office?" to find locations.

  1. Follow and Give Simple Instructions and Directions: Use and understand instructions and directions for daily tasks or travel by asking for help with phrases like “Can you tell me the way to the station?” and giving directions using phrases like “Go straight and turn left.”

  1. Use and Understand Simple Statements: Describe your surroundings by saying “There is a park near my house” or “There are many shops in the area” when providing directions or discussing places.
  1. Express Abilities and Preferences Using Modals: Talk about what you can do or what you prefer in various situations.
  1. Describe Places and Things Using Adjectives and Nouns: Provide descriptions of objects or locations with sentences like “The weather is cold” when discussing the weather or “My book is on the table” for explaining where things are.

Entry requirements:

This is an Entry 1/Entry 2 ESOL class so your English will be at elementary level. You already have some vocabulary so you can talk about daily topics, can use present simple, present continuous to describe objects and people, and can ask and answer simple questions. You now want to increase your vocabulary, become more confident in these tenses, talk about the future and use language more accurately.

You will need to do a pre-course assessment.

  • Lined A4 paper
  • A smartphone (if you have one)
  • A reusable water bottle

We will give you the WIFI details in the first lesson.

What examination is there:

There is no examination for this course. You will agree individual learning goals with your tutor which you must achieve by the end of the course.

How will I know I am making progress:

At the start of the course, your tutor will talk with you about which parts of your English you need to practise most and help you create an individual learning plan. Throughout the course, you will have a tutorial meeting to discuss your strengths, areas for improvement, and any problems you may have. You will keep a folder with your work, which will help you review your learning outside of class. Your tutor will give you regular feedback on your class work and homework to help you improve. To make progress, you need to attend all your classes and do work outside of class.

You will lose your place if your attendance is less than 80% and you will not receive a certificate of completion.

One of our aims is to help you make progress in work or future studies. We also want to help you participate in your communities and become an active citizen.
