Course Title: ESOL Speak with Confidence Entry 2/3

Hours per week: 2.5 hours

Brief course description:

This is a year-long course divided up into four 9-week parts. You can join any part over the year.

You will improve your speaking and listening skills through engaging activities and interactive lessons. The course will help you practice English in real-life situations like speaking on the phone, making appointments, talking to doctors, interacting with teachers at your children's school, and having conversations with neighbours and friends. You will also learn important vocabulary and grammar, including complex structures like the present perfect tense, to help you describe your emotions, feelings, and opinions more clearly.

By the end of the course, you will improve your speaking and listening skills, making it easier to interact confidently in various everyday situations. You will be able to take part in discussions, give short presentations, and understand information from talks and presentations. You will also be able to communicate your feelings and opinions effectively, making you feel more confident in your daily life.

 

Objectives:

  1. Speak Clearly and Confidently: Use simple, compound, and complex sentences to express ideas clearly in everyday situations, such as discussing plans, describing events, or sharing opinions.
  2. Understand and Use Complex Sentences: Recognise and construct complex sentences. For example, you’ll practice how to say why you need to change an appointment or describe what happened at an event.
  3. Describe and Compare Using Details: Use descriptive language and noun phrases to talk about people, places, and things, for example, when describing a local area, comparing products in a shop, or giving details about a special occasion.
  4. Ask and Answer Questions Effectively: Use a variety of question words and structures to gather information and clarify details in conversations with neighbours, during appointments, or when seeking information about local services.
  5. Give and Obtain Information: Obtain and provide relevant details in discussions, such as when asking for directions, discussing medical symptoms with a doctor, or sharing information about community events.
  6. Plan and Make Arrangements: Use appropriate language for planning and making arrangements, such as organising a social event, coordinating a family activity, or scheduling appointments.
  7. Express Opinions and Preferences: Use modals and phrasal verbs to give opinions, make suggestions, and state preferences in conversations about daily decisions, such as choosing a course, discussing hobbies, or deciding on a restaurant.
  8. Give Clear Instructions and Requests: Follow and give clear instructions in various contexts, such as explaining how to complete a form, requesting help with household tasks, or providing directions to someone.
  9. Discuss Future Plans and Past Experiences: Talk about future plans and past experiences using appropriate verb forms in discussions about upcoming events, past holidays, or previous work experiences.
  10. Improve Listening and Response Skills: Use active listening skills to follow and respond to conversations in different contexts, such as participating in group discussions, attending meetings, or engaging in casual conversations with friends and neighbours.

Entry requirements:

This is an Entry 2/Entry 3 ESOL class so your English will be at elementary/pre-intermediate level. You already have some vocabulary so you can talk about daily topics, can use present simple, present continuous and past simple to describe objects and people, and can ask and answer simple questions in these tenses. You now want to increase your vocabulary, become more confident in these tenses, talk about the future and use language more accurately.  

You will need to do a pre-course assessment.

  • A folder
  • Pens & pencils
  • Lined A4 paper
  • A smartphone (if you have one)
  • A reusable water bottle

We will give you the WIFI details in the first lesson.

What examination is there:

There is no examination for this course. You will agree individual learning goals with your tutor which you must achieve by the end of the course.

How will I know I am making progress:

At the start of the course, your tutor will talk with you about which parts of your English you need to practise most and help you create an individual learning plan. Throughout the course, you will have a tutorial meeting to discuss your strengths, areas for improvement, and any problems you may have. You will keep a folder with your work, which will help you review your learning outside of class. Your tutor will give you regular feedback on your class work and homework to help you improve. To make progress, you need to attend all your classes and do work outside of class.

You will lose your place if your attendance is less than 80% and you will not receive a certificate of completion.
