Entry 2 Speaking and Listening
Course Title: Entry 2 Speaking and Listening
Hours per week: 5
Brief course description:
This is a 17-week ESOL Entry 2 Speaking and Listening Exam Course.
You will learn to use English more confidently in everyday situations. You will practice speaking on the phone, making appointments, talking to doctors, and interacting with teachers and friends. You’ll also work on conversations with neighbours and learn useful vocabulary and grammar, including how to use the present perfect tense to talk about your feelings and experiences.
By the end of the course, you will be more comfortable and confident in your speaking and listening skills. You’ll be able to join in discussions, give short presentations, and understand information from talks. You will communicate your thoughts and feelings clearly, making it easier to understand daily conversations. You will also be well-prepared to achieve your Entry 2 exam.
Objectives:
- Understand and Respond to Spoken Details: Listen carefully to short stories or explanations to pick out key words and phrases. Use what you hear to confirm details or ask for more information during face-to-face conversations, like at a meeting or a doctor's appointment.
- Recognise and Use Basic Grammar: Spot and respond to basic grammar, like questions and instructions, in spoken English. Practice using simple present, past, and possessive forms when talking about daily routines, past events, or family.
- Understand Word Stress and Intonation: Notice how stressing certain words or changing intonation affects meaning. Practice recognising which words are stressed and distinguishing similar sounds when talking about common topics, such as shopping or travel.
- Give and Get Useful Information: Share and get personal and factual information clearly. Practice asking for directions, discussing health issues, or talking about local events, and respond with relevant details.
- Describe and Compare Things Clearly: Use descriptive words and correct grammar to talk about people, places, and objects. Practice describing a local area, comparing items in a shop, or discussing a special event.
- Plan and Arrange Activities: Use clear language to plan and organise events. Practice making plans for social gatherings, family activities, or appointments, and use future tenses and phrases to discuss these arrangements.
- Share and Respond to Opinions: Use simple phrases to share your opinions and preferences. Practice discussing things like choosing a course, talking about hobbies, or deciding where to eat, and make your likes and dislikes known.
- Improve Listening and Response Skills: Develop your listening skills by noting important details and confirming understanding. Join in group discussions and respond in a way that shows you understand.
- Take Part in Social Conversations: Use common phrases to start and end conversations. Practice making and responding to greetings, offers, and requests in social settings, using appropriate body language and eye contact.
- Give Clear Instructions and Explanations: Use straightforward language to give instructions or explain things. Practice explaining how to fill out a form, ask for help with a task, or give directions, making sure your explanations are easy to follow.

What examination is there:
You will undertake the Ascentis Entry 2 Speaking and Listening exam in your classroom with your teacher and sometimes other learners on the course.
There are three main tasks:
Task 1: Listening
The listening part of the speaking and listening exam is assessed through recorded listening tasks. You will listen to two recordings and answer questions based on gist, detail and response to instructions. Written responses are required for the listening tasks.
Task 2: Role Play
You will participate in a role play with the assessor who is your teacher.
Task 3: Presentation and Discussion
You will give a presentation in a small group. You will be given the topic up to two weeks before the assessment so that you can think about the topic and vocabulary needed. You will listen to each other and ask questions in a short discussion after each presentation.
The exam tasks are an important part of your course. They will be spread out over the course, so you MUST come to all your classes
How will I know I am making progress:
At the start of the course, your tutor will talk with you about which parts of your English you need to practise most and help you create an individual learning plan. Throughout the course, you will have a tutorial meeting to discuss your strengths, areas for improvement, and any problems you may have. You will keep a folder with your work, which will help you review your learning outside of class.
Your tutor will give you regular feedback on your class work and homework to help you improve. To make progress, you need to attend all your classes and do work outside of class.
You will lose your place if your attendance is less than 80%.
