Course Title: ESOL For Life and Work Entry 2/3

Brief course description:
This is a year-long course divided up into two 17-week parts. You can join any part over the year.
This Entry 2 ESOL course helps you improve your English for everyday life and work. You will develop your skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. You’ll practice asking and answering questions, talking and writing about daily activities, and describing and comparing objects. You’ll also learn to listen for details in short conversations and recordings, write short emails and letters, and use correct punctuation and spelling. We’ll cover practical topics like daily routines, shopping, budgeting, visiting the GP, to help you become more confident in your daily life and work.
By the end of the course, you’ll be able to have conversations, make appointments, and write short responses to communications from a school, a hospital, or the job centre. You’ll gain skills useful for work, job searching, or volunteering, and become more active in your community.
Objectives:
- Use English to Talk and Write About Everyday Activities: Practice speaking and writing about daily activities, such as asking for directions, shopping, and talking with friends, using simple and continuous tenses and past simple for describing past events.
- Ask and Answer Questions: Learn how to ask and answer questions about daily life using different tenses.
- Describe and Compare: Use simple adjectives and comparison words to describe things and compare them.
- Listen for Details: Improve your listening by understanding important information in short conversations and recordings about everyday topics, like listening to a voicemail about an appointment.
- Write Short Emails and Letters: Write simple emails and letters using formal and informal language.
- Use Punctuation Correctly: Practice using capital letters, full stops, question marks, and commas in your writing.
- Spell Common Words Correctly: Learn how to spell everyday words like "appointment," "receipt," and "exercise" correctly.
- Complete Simple Forms: Fill out basic forms with your personal details.
- Find and Understand Information: Read short texts, like notices or leaflets, to find and understand important details.
Entry requirements:
This is an Entry 2/3 ESOL class for adults over 19 years old. You should already know some basic English, about the same as Entry 1 level. This means you should be able to understand and use simple sentences and phrases in everyday situations. You should be motivated to improve your English for daily life, work, and community participation.
You will need to do a pre-course assessment.

- Pens & pencils
- Lined A4 paper
- A smartphone (if you have one)
- A reusable water bottle

What examination is there:
There is no examination for this course. You will agree individual learning goals with your tutor which you must achieve by the end of the course.
How will I know I am making progress:
At the start of the course, your tutor will talk with you about which parts of your English you need to practise most and help you create an individual learning plan. Throughout the course, you will have a tutorial meeting to discuss your strengths, areas for improvement, and any problems you may have. You will keep a folder with your work, which will help you review your learning outside of class. Your tutor will give you regular feedback on your class work and homework to help you improve. To make progress, you need to attend all your classes and do work outside of class.
You will lose your place if your attendance is less than 80% and you will not receive a certificate of completion.

In our Entry 2 classes, you will develop important skills that employers value and that will help you in everyday life. Here’s what you will learn:

- Decision-Making: You will learn how to make good choices by evaluating different options and thinking critically about situations.
- Teamwork: You will learn how to work well with others.
- Problem-Solving: You will develop the ability to identify problems and find effective solutions, useful in both work and daily life.
- Time Management: You will practice managing your time effectively, including setting goals and meeting deadlines.
- Customer Service Skills: You will learn how to interact politely and professionally with customers.
By improving these skills, you will increase your chances of finding a job, advancing in your career, and becoming an active member of your community.
