Course Title: ESOL Speak with Confidence Entry 3 / Level 1

Brief course description:
This is a year-long course divided up into four 9-week parts. You can join any part over the year.
You will enhance your English-speaking skills through engaging, practical exercises designed to build your confidence. You will learn how to handle everyday conversations, give and follow instructions, and ask for or provide information clearly. Through interactive role-plays, discussions, and real-life scenarios, you’ll practice using simple language and making polite requests or offers. The course will also focus on understanding and responding to both yes/no and wh-questions, as well as managing misunderstandings effectively.
By the end of the course, you will confidently handle various speaking situations, from social interactions to formal exchanges. You will be able to introduce yourself and others, make clear requests, follow instructions accurately, and engage in meaningful conversations about familiar topics. Your improved ability to provide clear information and navigate everyday interactions will help you feel more confident and effective in both personal and professional settings.
Objectives:
- Ask and Answer Detailed Questions: Ask and answer questions to obtain specific information in daily situations, such as inquiring about the opening hours of a shop or asking if someone has completed a task.
- Understand and Use Complex Sentences: Construct and comprehend sentences with multiple parts, such as explaining a process with several steps or giving detailed instructions for assembling furniture.
- Give and Follow Detailed Instructions: Give and follow clear instructions for everyday tasks, like showing someone how to use a new device or directing them to a specific location.
- Describe People and Situations: Use simple language to talk about people, places, and events, like explaining what a colleague does at work or describing a new park in your area.
- Discuss Past Experiences and Future Plans: Share details about past activities and future intentions, such as recounting previous work experiences or discussing plans for an upcoming holiday or trip.
- Make and Respond to Requests: Formulate requests and respond appropriately, such as asking a colleague to review a document or agreeing to assist with a task.
- Give and Ask for Opinions and Advice: Offer your opinions and seek advice on various topics, such as providing feedback on a proposal or asking for recommendations on a restaurant.
- Understand and Use Discourse Markers: Employ discourse markers like "however" or "then" to link ideas coherently in conversations, such as transitioning from explaining a problem to proposing a solution.
- Report and Clarify Information: Report information from others and seek clarification when needed, such as summarising what was discussed in a meeting or asking for further details about a new project.
- Express and Respond to Feelings and Preferences: Clearly share your feelings and likes, like talking about your favourite hobbies or responding kindly when someone else shares their experiences.
Entry requirements:
This is an Entry 3/ Level 1 ESOL class so your English will be at an intermediate/ advanced level. To join this course, you should have a good range of vocabulary and can talk and write about everyday topics as well as your own areas of special interest. You can use a range of tenses and language structures fairly accurately, but need to practice these more, focusing on more complex structures to better express yourself and improve your confidence.
You will need to do a pre-course assessment.

What examination is there:
There is no examination for this course. You will agree individual learning goals with your tutor which you must achieve by the end of the course.
How will I know I am making progress:
At the start of the course, your tutor will talk with you about which parts of your English you need to practise most and help you create an individual learning plan. Throughout the course, you will have a tutorial meeting to discuss your strengths, areas for improvement, and any problems you may have. You will keep a folder with your work, which will help you review your learning outside of class. Your tutor will give you regular feedback on your class work and homework to help you improve. To make progress, you need to attend all your classes and do work outside of class.
You will lose your place if your attendance is less than 80% and you will not receive a certificate of completion.

In our Entry 2 classes, you will develop important skills that employers value and that will help you in everyday life. Here’s what you will learn:
- Communication Skills: You will learn to speak and write more clearly and confidently. This includes practising conversations for work, writing emails, and filling out forms.
- Decision-Making: You will learn how to make good choices by evaluating different options and thinking critically about situations.
- Teamwork: You will learn how to work well with others.
- Problem-Solving: You will develop the ability to identify problems and find effective solutions, useful in both work and daily life.
- Time Management: You will practice managing your time effectively, including setting goals and meeting deadlines.
By improving these skills, you will increase your chances of finding a job, advancing in your career, and becoming an active member of your community.
