ESOL Write with Confidence Entry 2/3
Course Title: ESOL Write with Confidence, Entry 2/3
Hours per week: 2.5 hours
Brief course description:
This is a year-long course divided up into four 9-week parts. You can join any part over the year.
Can you talk about everyday life, but need to improve your writing? Is writing your most difficult skill in English?
In this course, you will focus on improving your writing skills by learning how to structure texts effectively. This includes organising your writing into clear paragraphs, using appropriate punctuation, and applying correct spelling and grammar. You will also practice common writing conventions, such as capitalisation and the use of symbols (e.g., &, @, £). Additionally, you will enhance your understanding of English grammar to help you write more clearly and confidently. This focus on structure and conventions will also support you in formal speaking situations, such as job interviews, work meetings, and simple presentations.
By the end of the course, you will be able to write texts with clear organisation and proper grammar, whether it’s for personal messages, completing forms, or sharing your experiences. You will gain confidence in spelling and punctuation and learn how to write using different tenses and sentence structures. With these skills, you will communicate more effectively in both written and spoken English, making it easier to express yourself and engage in various everyday situations. Join us to build your writing skills and enhance your ability to convey your ideas clearly.
Objectives:
- Organise and Structure Different Texts: Learn how to plan and arrange various types of writing such as emails, letters, and notes. For example, you will draft an email to a landlord using compound sentences to clearly state the repair issue and a closing sentence that summarises your request.
- Complete Forms Accurately: Practice filling out forms with personal details correctly, such as a medical appointment form. You will use appropriate tenses and structures, like simple present for current details and past simple for previous experiences.
- Improve Writing with Model Texts: Study example texts to understand their structure and improve your own writing. For instance, you will use sample complaint letters to help write a letter to a service provider, using complex sentences to explain the issue and suggested solutions.
- Communicate Personal Information: Learn how to give and ask for personal details, describe places, and share your opinions. You will practice writing a description of your local area using descriptive adjectives and providing detailed information with complex sentences.
- Give Factual Accounts and Narrate Events: Write about past events, share your feelings, and make suggestions. For example, you might write a narrative about a recent visit to a local festival using past continuous to describe events and future simple to discuss potential future activities.
- Start and End Writing Effectively: Learn how to begin and end your writing clearly, including drafting an effective opening for a job application letter and a proper closing for a formal complaint letter.
- Write Correct Paragraphs: Understand how to write well-structured paragraphs with a clear main idea and supporting details.
- Use Different Sentence Types: Write using simple, compound, and complex sentences to clearly express your ideas. This includes constructing a complex sentence to explain your plans for a weekend trip and using compound sentences to describe multiple activities in a report about your hobbies.
- Apply Time Markers and Tenses: Practice using time markers like “firstly” or “last week” and write in different tenses to describe when things happen.
- Proofread and Choose Vocabulary: Develop your proofreading skills to catch mistakes and choose the right words for formal or informal communication.
